A New York bookseller, Warshaw assembled this collection over nearly fifty years. The Warshaw Collection of Business Americana: Salvation Army forms part of the Warshaw Collection of Business Americana, Subseries 1.1: Subject Categories. The Subject Categories subseries is divided into 470 subject categories based on those created by Mr. Warshaw. These subject categories include topical subjects, types or forms of material, people, organizations, historical events, and other categories. Scope and Contents
This subject category- Salvation Army consists mostly of material that an average citizen might have seen or received about the society. This includes solicitation letters, publications, and general promotional items. The published items are mostly from the New York City office of the Salvation Army and many of the items are not dated. The collection is in arranged in order by type of material.
Series 1, Correspondence, 1903-1931, consists of letters from various branches of the Salvation Army sent out in mass-mailings to recruit donations. There are also two items discussing the Salvation Army's yearly meeting. This series includes envelops to returned donations in which would have been sent with requests. The series is arranged chronologically with the undated envelopes last.
Series 2, Financial, 1896-1925; undated, is a variety of contribution cards seeking donations of which only two are completed. The series also has three receipts for contributions, and a published copy of the annual report of 1915. The series is organized by type of financial document.
Series 3, Published Information about the Salvation Army, 1884-1904, is primarily pamphlets about the work of the Salvation Army in general and in specific campaigns. Many of the publications also have other paperwork that was sent with them including letters asking for donations, and envelops to return the donations in. An 1894 copy of War Cry the Official Gazette of the Salvation Army in the United States is also a part of this series.
Series 4, Promotional Items, 1901, 1903; undated, contains publicity items for the Salvation Army including advertisements for events held by the Salvation Army, a program from their Christmas Dinner in New York City in 1903, a ticket to the annual meeting from 1901, cardboard tags to be worn, and a ribbon for a Salvation Army worker from Illinois.

Immediate Source of Acquisition note
Salvation Army is a portion of the Business Ephemera Series of the Warshaw Collection of Business Americana, Accession AC0060 purchased from Isadore Warshaw in 1967. Warshaw continued to accumulate similar material until his death, which was donated in 1971 by his widow, Augusta. For a period after acquisition, related materials from other sources (of mixed provenance) were added to the collection so there may be content produced or published after Warshaw's death in 1969. This practice has since ceased.
