Scope and Contents
This material consists primarily of theater programs (leaflets and pamphlets) , images of performers and theaters, photographs, advertising cards, postcards, correspondence on letterhead stationary, theater tickets, newspaper clippings, articles, periodicals, pamphlets, catalogs and books. These materials are divided into eight series : American theaters, Foreign theaters, Performers, Managers/Agents/Agencies, Associations/Clubs, Theater productions, General works and Related publications.
The first series, American theaters, can be found in box 1-8 and consists primarily of images of theaters and of theater programs presenting plays, musicals, operas, minstrel shows and vaudeville acts. There are about 315 theaters listed, of which ca. 115 in New York City and ca. 35 in Boston, Massachusetts. The listing includes opera houses, music halls and entertainment halls.
The second series, Foreign theaters, is in box 9 and consists primarily of theater programs. There are 36 theaters listed of which ca. 20 in England and about 10 in France.
The third series, Performers, can be found in box 10-14 and consists primarily of images, photographs, correspondence on letterhead stationary and advertising cards of performers as well as products like tobacco and clothing. Soloists as well as companies are listed here, around 625 in total. Amongst them are actors, actresses, musicians, comedians, vaudeville artists and minstrels.
The fourth series, Managers, Agents and Agencies, is in box 15 and consists primarily of correspondence on letterhead stationary. There are 51 managers, agents and agencies listed.
The fifth series, Associations and Clubs, can be found in box 15 and consists primarily of leaflets and pamphlets. There are 28 associations and clubs listed, varying from nationwide associations like the "Association of Vaudeville Managers of the United States" to local clubs like the "Neighborhood Club".
The sixth series, Theater productions, can be found in box 16 and consists primarily of pamphlets and advertising cards. "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and "Romeo And Juliet" are two of the eight theater productions listed.
The seventh series, General works, is in box 16 and 17. Here advertising cards, business cards, postcards, theater tickets and newspaper clippings can be found as well as leaflets on various subjects like charity performances, school performances, costumes, scenery and studios.
The eighth series, Related publications, can be found in box 18-20. The related publications include two articles, eleven periodicals, eight catalogs (some on theater production s, some on theaters and hotels), eleven pamphlets and 26 books. The books vary from biographies to year books to manuals for managing amateur theatricals or organizing bazaars and fancy fairs.
