Scope and Contents

Scope and Contents
Includes sheet music by Indiana publishers. The bulk of the material dates from 1882 to 1933 and is arranged alphabetically by title in 8 boxes. The music is generally composed for piano and piano/vocal. The compositions include two-steps, marches, waltzes, and ballads. A consistent theme throughout the series of sheet music is the publication in Indiana, where Sam DeVincent lived for most of his life. Most of the pieces were published in Fort Wayne and Indianapolis. Other compositions were published in Indiana cities such as Arcadia, Huntington, Marion, Reelsville, Richmond, and Warsaw. The songs in the series concern subjects such as love, religion, and patriotism. A portion of the compositions created after the end of World War I are about war heroes, soldiers, and coming home from war. The illustrations in the series generally depict men and women falling in love as well as soldiers returning from war.
