The National Collection of Fine Arts' (NCFA) Department of Prints and Drawings was created in 1967 under the direction of Jacob Kainen, Curator (1967-1969). In 1980, NCFA was renamed the National Museum of American Art (NMAA). Following the museum's name change, the Department of Prints and Drawings was renamed the Department of Graphic Arts (1983). Further reorganization followed and, in 1989, the Departments of Graphic Arts and Painting and Sculpture combined to form the Curatorial Department, later renamed the Curatorial Office (c. 1992).
