This accession consists of materials that document the curatorial and professional activities of Ellen Gross Miles, Associate Curator, 1977-1984, Curator of Painting and Sculpture, 1984-1994, and Chairman of the Department of Painting and Sculpture, 1994- .
Of special interest are records regarding Dr. Miles' tenure as chairman of the Research Policy Committee, 1992-1995 (box 2). These records are supplemented by those of the previous Chair, Anson T. Hines of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC). Overall the Committee records span 1986-1995. Additional records for the Committee may be found in the following collections: Record Unit 329, Record Unit 215, 95-083, and 95-147.
There is also material regarding Dr. Miles' organization of a symposium "The Portrait in Eighteenth Century America" (1987) held in conjunction with the exhibition American Colonial Portraits, 1700-1776.
Materials include agendas, minutes, budget working files, proposed exhibition files, correspondence, memoranda, reports, planning and logistical files for the symposium; general inquiries, notes and related materials.
