This accession consists of records created and maintained by Devra G. Kleiman, documenting research and breeding programs at the National Zoological Park as well as programs in which the National Zoological Park was partially involved. The majority of the records document behavioral studies of giant pandas, the mating of Hsing-Hsing and Ling-Ling and subsequent births, the Golden Lion Tamarin Release Program, and the breeding of golden lion tamarins and golden lion marmosets. Devra G. Kleiman was a research scientist as well as Assistant Director for Animal Programs, 1983-1984; Assistant Director for Zoological Research and Educational Activities, 1984-1985; and Assistant Director for Research, 1985-1996.
Materials include correspondence, memoranda, notes, observations, studbooks, statistical data, preparatory materials for articles and conferences, meeting minutes, golden lion tamarin fur samples, and other research-related materials. Materials also include video footage of the interactions between Hsing-Hsing and Ling-Ling and the birth of each of Ling-Ling's three offspring in U-matic, 1/2" EIAJ, Beta, VHS, and metal particle tape formats; audio cassette tapes, mostly transcribed, of observations made during panda watches; master and duplicate copies of the thirty minute film Social and Reproductive Development of the Giant Panda in U-matic and 1/2" EIAJ videotape format; and a release print, working prints, original color negatives, and an "A" and "B" roll for the four-minute film Golden Lion Tamarin Reintroduction to the Wild.
