These records, created and maintained by David Jenkins, Associate Director, Office of Exhibits and Outreach (previously Associate Director for Interpretive Programs), document his professional activities and ideas for educational activities as well as development of new and improvement of existing exhibitions and the upkeep and safety of zoo grounds. Major topics include Amazonia, the proposed exhibition dealing with water and aquatic ecology, and the Smithsonian conference "What About Diffusion?" which Jenkins co-chaired. Records prior to Jenkins's arrival c. 1994 were primarily created by Robert E. Mulcahy and Virginia A. Mahoney. Mulcahy headed the Office of Graphics and Exhibits from 1974 to 1987 holding the titles of Chief, Manager of Design, and Manager. Mahoney served as Art Director, Office of Graphics and Exhibits, 1981-c. 1982; Supervisor, Design Unit, Office of Graphics and Exhibits, c. 1982-1987; and Acting Head, Office of Graphics and Exhibits, 1987-1990. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, notes, reports, pamphlets, photographs, slides, maps, and related materials.
