Descriptive Entry

Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of the records of Niani Kilkenny, former Director of the Program in African American Culture (PAAC), which primarily document the planning for and the activities of the Duke Ellington Youth Project. The project is designed to introduce District of Columbia high school students to the legacy of Duke Ellington in order to foster student interest in the performing arts, literature, history, and the visual arts by using resources at the National Museum of American History, such as the Duke Ellington Collection. The project includes a Duke Ellington Festival component that engages students in honoring Ellington and his music through dance, vocal, instrumental, and theatrical performances.
Materials include the correspondence and memoranda of Gwendolyn Robinson, Director, 1989-1992; Niani Kilkenny, Acting Director, 1988-1989, and Director, 1992-2004; and Luvenia A. George, Coordinator. Also included are a mission statement; proposals; workshop information; photographs and slides; educational kits; budget summaries; festival literature; reports; cassette and videotape recordings of events; and news releases. A few non-related project records are included in this accession, such as various PAAC program publications and literature on African diaspora.
