Descriptive Entry
Martha Burton Woodhead Williamson (1843-1922) was born in England and came to America with her parents at an early age, living in Ohio. During the Civil War she worked for the Christian Commission in Memphis, Tennessee. She was a faithful member of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. In 1887 she moved to Los Angeles, California, and became a collector of California coastal shells. She corresponded and shared specimens with various malacologists of her time, including William Healey Dall and J. G. Cooper. Materials in this accession include correspondence, photographs, and clippings. Williamson's work was summarized in E. V. Coan, "The Malacological Papers and Taxa of Martha Burton Woodhead Williamson, 1843-1922," The Veliger, 1989, 32(3): 296-301.
