This accession consists of records which document the work of the Department of Exhibitions and Collections Management in the preparation and development of exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery, particularly the movement of art objects on loan both to and from the museum. Exhibitions documented include Andy Warhol's Flash - November 22, 1963; Peace and Friendship: Indian Peace Medals in the United States; Image of the Presidency: Photographs by George Tames, 1944-1974; Art and the Camera, 1900-1940: Pictorialist Photographs from the National Portrait Gallery; Theodore Roosevelt: Icon of the American Century; Hans Namuth: Portraits; Philippe Halsman: A Retrospective; Reporting the War: The Journalistic Coverage of World War II; Celebrity Caricature in America; Franklin and His Friends: Portraying the Man of Science in Eighteenth-Century America; Faces of Time: 75 Years of Time Magazine Cover Portraits; George C. Marshall: Soldier of Peace; A Durable Memento: Portrait by Augustus Washington, African American Daguerreotypist; Picturing Hemingway: A Writer in His Time; Edward Sorel: Unauthorized Portraits; George and Martha: Portraits from the Presidential Years; Notable Women from the National Portrait Gallery; Tete a Tete: Portraits by Henri Cartier-Bresson; From Truman to Clinton: Presidents on TIME; and Vanderzee, Photographer (1886-1983). Planned exhibitions documented include Civil War Era, Oscar!, and Congressional Medal of Honor. Materials include correspondence; memoranda; black-and-white photographs and transparencies; schedules; proposals; color photographs, slides, and transparencies; press kits; VHS tapes; posters; invitations; and audio cassettes. Some materials are in electronic format.
