Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of records documenting the research and professional activities of Melbourne R. Carriker, marine malacologist. Carriker's research interests included snails, oysters, clams, invasive species of mollusks, marine mariculture, and estuarine ecology. Much of Carriker's research focused on South America, where he was born in Santa Marta, Colombia and on the Chesapeake Bay, where he taught at the University of Delaware, College of Marine Studies. Carriker also wrote several books about his father, ornithologist Melbourne Armstrong Carriker, and their lives in Colombia and Bolivia. Materials include correspondence; research notes; lectures; manuscripts; course materials; newsletters and conference materials from various professional societies; lantern slides, transparencies, negatives, photographs, videotapes, audiotapes, and film created for research purposes; transparencies from research and personal trips, including several South American locations associated with the Carriker family; and materials related to books written about the Carriker family.
