This accession consists of materials related to the development, research, and production of exhibitions at the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), both at the Mall museum site and at the George Gustav Heye Center (GGHC) in New York, New York. Exhibitions covered include The Art of Being Kuna: Layers of Meaning Among the Kuna of Panama; Woven by the Grandmothers: Nineteenth Century Navajo Textiles from the National Museum of the American Indian (working title: Woven from Life: Navajo Textiles); Spirit Capture: Native Americans and the Photographic Image (working title: Photo Masterworks); To Honor and Comfort: Native Quilting Traditions; Agayuliyararput (Our Way of Making Prayer): The Living Tradition of Yup'ik Masks; All Roads Are Good: Native Voices on Life and Culture; Stories of the People (also know as A&I Exhibit); Reservation X: The Power of Place; Our Universes: Traditional Knowledge Shapes Our World; Our Peoples: Giving Voice to Our Histories; and Our Lives: Contemporary Life and Identities. Also covered are workshops conducted related to the exhibition, Woven by the Grandmothers: Nineteenth Century Navajo Textiles from the National Museum of the American Indian; reports and presentations of exhibitions given to the Senior Management Group of NMAI; and materials related to the Exhibition Master Plan (EMP). Staff represented in the collection are James Volkert, Deputy Assistant Director for Exhibitions; Cécile R. Materials include correspondence; memoranda; research files; exhibition scripts; design development materials; reports; presentations; transcripts; grant proposals; schedules; letters of agreement; color photographs, negatives, and transparencies; black-and-white negatives and photographs; architectural drawings; exhibition drawings; floor plans; audiocassettes; a VHS tape; clippings; pamphlets; and brochures.
