This accession consists of records that document the operation and administration of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in the Canal Zone and elsewhere in Panama. The majority of the records were created by Ira Rubinoff, Biologist and Assistant Director of Marine Biology, 1964-1970, Assistant Director of Science, 1970-1973, and Director, 1973-2008; Roberta W. Rubinoff, Marine Sciences Coordinator; Jeremy B. C. Jackson, Marine Sciences Coordinator; D. Ross Robertson, Scientist-in-Charge, San Blas Facility; and Georgina A. de Alba, Education Coordinator. Topics include construction, policies, research, facilities, personnel, equipment, projects, visiting researchers, fellowships, field expeditions, and relations with Panamanian (Autoridad del Canal de Panama ) and Canal Zone authorities. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, reports, proposals, notes, budgets, photographs, architectural drawings, brochures, maps, and related materials.
