This accession consists of the website of the Smithsonian Photography Initiative (SPI). The website was crawled on June 9, June 13, and July 7, 2011. All three crawls were incomplete, but together have captured the majority of the website. SPI was responsible for bringing greater public awareness to the Smithsonian Institution's vast photographic collections. On March 31, 2009, SPI became part of the Smithsonian Institution Archives. SPI's website continued to be maintained until early 2012 when it was discontinued. The website highlighted collections, exhibitions, and publications as well as presented images contained in collections throughout the entire Smithsonian Institution. No significant changes were made to the website after the 2011 crawls. Materials are in electronic format.
