Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of approximately 3000 Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images of bird feathers created by Roxie C. Laybourne, a pioneering forensic scientist at the Smithsonian Institution. Her expertise in identifying bird feathers helped government agencies and jet engine manufacturers take measures to keep birds away from aircraft. All of these images have been digitized in the Division of Birds. Materials include negatives, photographs, slides, and notes.
