Descriptive Entry
Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of two websites maintained by the Smithsonian Institution.
"The Written in Rock Project" website, crawled May 7, 2014, documents a joint project between the Smithsonian Institution, Office of Policy and Analysis, the National Museum of the American Indian, and the Gobustan National Historical Artistic Preserve. The Written in Rock Project focuses on two petroglyph sites that are open to tourists - the Petroglyph National Monument in Albuquerque, New Mexico and the Gobustan (Qobustan) landscape in Azerbaijan. A group of twelve Azerbaijani and Pueblo Indian individuals were selected to participate in the year-long project (2012-2013) during which they studied the petroglyphs and cultures of each region and accumulated knowledge to share with their broader communities and the public. The website includes information about the project, sites, and participants and is available in both English and Azeri.
The "Gobustan Petroglyphs" website, crawled May 8, 2014, documents petroglyph research in Azerbaijan undertaken as a collaborative effort between the Smithsonian Office of Policy and Analysis and the Gobustan National Historical Artistic Preserve. The website includes information about the site as well as the research techniques and methodologies used.
Materials are in electronic format.
