Descriptive Entry

Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of records documenting the research and outreach activities of ornithologist Russell Greenberg (1953-2013). Greenberg began his career in 1977 at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and was founder and first director of the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center at the National Zoological Park in 1991. His research interests included birds of tropical forests and wetlands as well as the development of sustainable and bird-friendly coffee and cacao farming. Particularly well-documented in this accession are bird censuses in Mexico, swamp sparrow censuses, warbler experiments, and the planning and administration of the First Sustainable Coffee Congress in 1996 and a sustainable cacao workshop in 1998. Materials include field books, field observations, data sheets, compiled data, correspondence, proposals, meeting materials, manuscripts, clippings, slides, photographs, audio recordings, a video profile, and related materials. Some materials are in electronic format. Much of the field data and other documentation was recorded by others and collected by Greenberg. Some materials may have been created by Greenberg while he was still a student.
