This accession consists of records created and maintained by John Haworth, Director, George Gustav Heye Center, National Museum of the American Indian. Haworth was appointed Director in 1994 and retired from the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in 2017. Located in New York City, the George Gustav Heye (GGHC) was initially a private foundation but was incorporated into the larger National Museum of the American Indian, created by Congress in 1989. The Heye Center opened in 1994 and is dedicated to reaffirming and empowering the Native American voice through exhibitions and programs about Native American cultures throughout the Americas. As Director, Haworth was responsible for all aspects of the Center's operations, including administration, membership, and ongoing consultations with the Native American community. Well documented in this accession are the GGHC Board of Directors meetings and the Film and Video Center. Some records date from when the museum was known as the Museum of the American Indian and before it was a part of the Smithsonian Institution. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, board meeting agendas and minutes, budget records, reports, architectural drawings, floor plans, brochures, and clippings.
