Descriptive Entry
Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of the papers of James W. Eike (1911-1983), birdwatcher and former president of the Virginia Society of Ornithology (VSO), which he joined in 1933 and was an active member the rest of his life. Eike was an observer of birds in and around northern Virginia, and he participated in numerous field trips and bird counts sponsored by the VSO and the Audubon Naturalist Society. He was a good friend of Alexander Wetmore, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, who participated in VSO annual meetings and bird observations. A small amount of these papers also consist of the bird count notes of Claire L. Eike, who collected data after her husband's death. Materials include field notebooks; bird count notebooks and checklists; correspondence and notes; articles; and newspaper clippings.
