Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of records created and maintained by Joseph L. Russo documenting technological developments, strategic planning, and projects in relation to computer technology and the growth of databases and the internet at the Smithsonian Institution. Russo began his Smithsonian career in 1982 as a fisheries biologist for the United States Department of Commerce, stationed at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH). In 1983, he joined the Smithsonian's Office of Information Resource Management as a computer programmer analyst in the Scientific Applications Division (SAD) which later became the Information Support Services Division (ISSD). In 1987 and 1988, he was head software specialist and acting manager of the ISSD. In 1989, he was named Manager. In May of 1991, Russo oversaw the evolution of the ISSD to the Research Systems Division (RSD). The RSD was abolished in February of 1992 and Russo was reassigned to the SIRIS (Smithsonian Institution Research Information System) Office. In 1993, he returned to the SAD and, by 1994, became the manager of the Collections Information Systems Division. In 1995, he became Assistant Director of the Information Technology Services Division at the same time the OIRM became the Office of Information Technology (OIT). In 2002 the OIT became the Office of the Chief Information Officer, and Russo became the Collections Systems Division manager in the Office of Systems Modernization. Materials include correspondence, reports, meeting materials, planning documents, clippings, a photograph, notes, and related materials. Some materials are in electronic format.
