These are the professional papers documenting the career of J. F. Gates Clarke, a lepidopterist. Clarke served on the staff of the United States Department of Agriculture, as well as the Smithsonian, as a curator and Chairman of the Department of Entomology. The papers document his research on microlepidoptera; his curatorial and administrative duties; and his activities in professional societies. Materials include correspondence, notes, manuscripts, journals, field notes, photographs, slides, and negatives.
