Carolyn Kinder Carr was appointed to the newly-created position of National Portrait Gallery (NPG) Assistant Director for Collections in November 1983. These records document Carr's activity in that capacity, and contain reports and memoranda created by her office, other NPG offices, and other Smithsonian bureaus; as well as official correspondence with outside museums, private donors, and professional acquaintances. Much of the material concerns collections management issues, but administrative files regarding topics such as personnel matters and facility maintenance are also included. Carr's participation in Smithsonian management committees is extensively recorded. In addition, the records include some memoranda and correspondence created and received by Barbara A. Hart, NPG Executive Officer.
These records also contain detailed documentation of the exhibition Then and Now: American Portraits from the Past Century, which opened in Hong Kong in December 1987. Carr was involved in assembling the exhibition, and was author of its catalogue, copies of which are included.
