Descriptive Entry
Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of the records of Tom L. Freudenheim, Assistant Secretary for the Arts and Humanities. Freudenheim became the first Assistant Secretary for Museums when the office was created in February 1986 to absorb some functions of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Museum Programs, which had been held by Paul N. Perrot from 1973 to 1984, and by William N. Richards in an acting capacity from 1984 to 1986. In fiscal year 1992 the name of the office was changed to Assistant Secretary for the Arts and Humanities (OAS/AH). Materials include correspondence, memoranda, and notes generated both within and outside of the Smithsonian Institution which document the functions and activities of OAS/AH and the bureaus over which it had oversight; Smithsonian-wide issues and initiatives that OAS/AH was involved with or interested in; administration of the Experimental Gallery, a special project of OAS/AH which was established in February 1991; and the development, installation, and response to exhibitions that appeared in the Experimental Gallery. The records also include reports; budget summaries; the Art Directors Club of Metropolitan Washington Distinguished Leadership Award for 1990; and the 1994 Presidential Design Award.
