Descriptive Entry

Descriptive Entry
Dean R. Chapman (1922-1995) was an authority on tektites (enigmatic natural glass objects that are found in certain regions of both the Earth's land surfaces and in its deep sea sediments. Tektites have historically been collected along with meteorites). He spent most of his career as an aerodynamicist at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Ames Research Center. Chapman amassed a large collection of tektites which was donated to the National Museum of Natural History. These papers document Chapman's research on the origin of tektites and the development of his collection. They consist of incoming and outgoing correspondence exchanged between Chapman and scientists, museums, collectors, and dealers.
