Descriptive Entry
Gordon Enoch Gates (1897-1987), an authority on the taxonomy, morphology, physiology, and zoogeography of earthworms, served as Head of the Biology Department at Judson College in Burma, 1921-1941; Professor of Biology at Rangoon College, 1941-1946; Fellow, Museum of Comparative Zoology, 1946-1947; Professor of Biology, Colby College, 1948-1950; and Guggenheim Fellow, 1951- 1952. Gates donated his collection of worms to the National Museum of Natural History. The majority of letters were written after Gates' retirement in 1952 when he was conducting independent research.
