This accession consists of the records of David W. Scott, Director of the National Collection of Fine Arts (NCFA), 1965-1969. Materials include Scott's correspondence, memoranda, notes, publications, and lecture papers; meeting minutes; reports; information pertaining to NCFA mission, collections, exhibitions, special events, and personnel; restoration and gallery plans for the Patent Office Building; press releases and newspaper clippings pertaining to NCFA; mailing lists; files documenting Scott's professional involvement in the College Art Association of America and the Smithsonian Art Commission; information about donations, lending collections, and planning for the Renwick Gallery; proposal for the establishment of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, with related records; and budget summaries. A significant amount of correspondence in this collection is between Scott and S. Dillion Ripley, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution; Donald McClelland, NCFA Associate Curator, 1967-1968, and Coordinator of Special Projects, 1969-1972; and Harry Lowe, NCFA Curator, 1965-1972.
