Descriptive Entry
Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of records that document the exhibition Jacob Kainen that was held at the National Museum of American Art (NMAA) from September 10, 1993 to January 2, 1994. Virginia M. Mecklenburg, Chief Curator of the NMAA Curatorial Department, and Guest Curator Walter Hopps, who was Curator of The Menil Collection, Houston, Texas, curated the exhibition. After closing at NMAA, the exhibition traveled to the Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, where it was shown from January 21 to March 28, 1994; and to the Equitable Gallery of the Equitable Life Assurance Society, New York, New York, where it was shown from July 1 to October 1, 1994.
The records document all aspects of the show, and include a prospectus; research files; correspondence with the guest curator, lenders, and the Kainen family; lender files; checklists; photographs and slides of the artwork; label copy; brochure and catalog texts; press clippings; and agreements with the tour host galleries. Most of the files date from 1991 to 1994, but some research files contain interviews with Kainen that date from 1982.
