Descriptive Entry

Descriptive Entry
The Polaris Expedition was undertaken for scientific observation in the Arctic during the period from 1871 to 1873, under the direction of the Navy. The Smithsonian Institution was involved, especially in meteorological observations, and acquired part of the records with a view to publishing them. This collection consists of the records themselves plus the preparatory work of Dr. Emil Bessels, who oversaw their publication in Scientific Results of the United States Arctic Expedition, 1876.
