Descriptive Entry

Descriptive Entry
These records are of incoming and outgoing shipments of the United States National Museum and other Smithsonian bureaus. Information recorded usually includes date, control number, address of sender and recipient, contents, and charges. Apparently a shipping office was set up in the new Natural History Building in 1912, and the main record was transferred there. Entries in the main record after 1912 reflect transportation activities related only to the National Museum. A separate record was set up in 1912 for other Smithsonian bureaus. The materials document the work of Stephen C. Brown, Registrar, 1880-1919; Herbert S. Bryant, Chief, Division of Correspondence and Documents, United States National Museum, 1917-1948; and Helena M. Weiss, Registrar.
