Projects represented in these records include the National Collection of Fine Arts, the National Portrait Gallery, and the acquisition of the Patent Office Building; Smithsonian Associates; National Armed Forces Museum Advisory Board; National Council on the Arts; extensive liaison with the Astrophysical Observatory and its stations around the world; and the Science Information Exchange.
The records consist of memoranda, correspondence, reports, contracts and agreements, drawings and blueprints, budgets, and other fiscal records.

Historical Note
The position of Assistant to the Secretary was created in 1959. James Bradley held the post for one year and was succeeded by Theodore W. Taylor, who served from 1960 to 1966. The Assistant was responsible for various projects as directed by the Secretary.
