These records are the files of the Assistant Secretary for Museum Programs concerning these two activities. The records include correspondence, memoranda, newsletters, brochures, minutes of meetings, and other material.
Historical Note
Historical Note
The Smithsonian Institution sponsored a major special exhibit entitled Drugs in May 1972. It sought to trace the historical roots and evolution of the use of hallucinogens and to educate the public in understanding drugs in our culture. The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Museum Programs sponsored an adjunct activities area for the presentation of panel discussions, lectures, theatrical shows, films, and other events.
The Assistant Secretary for Museum Programs is the representative of the Secretary of the Smithsonian on the Advisory Council for Historic Preservation. The Council is the federal agency charged with advising the President and Congress on matters of historic preservation with regard to the National Register of Historic Places, legislation, and the activities of the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property.
