These records consist of a variety of record and ledger books documenting loans, accessions, requisitions, and the mounting of specimens; annual and quarterly reports; files relating to World War II problems of loans and storage; exchange files including correspondence with other institutions; a botanical reference file of replies to public inquiries; and an administrative subject file maintained by William L. Stern.

Jason Richard Swallen succeeded Ellsworth Paine Killip as head curator of the department and served from 1950 to 1964. In 1964, the administrative title was changed to chairman; chairmen represented in these records include William L. Stern, 1965-1967, and Mason E. Hale, 1968-1970.
