Descriptive Entry
These records document the tenure of Joshua C. Taylor as Director, 1970-1981, with small amounts of materials from 1960s. Additionally some records date back to 1934. In addition there is a folder of correspondence with David E. Finley dated 1938-1977. Included are files on museum offices, Smithsonian offices, various art commissions, other museums, events, and exhibitions. Some materials date to when the museum was known as the National Collection of Fine Arts and the National Gallery of Art respectively.

Historical Note
Joshua C. Taylor served as Director until his death in April 1981. Harry Lowe was Acting Director, 1981, and Charles C. Eldredge was appointed Director, 1982- .
After moving into its new home in the Patent Office Building (POB) in 1968, the museum enjoyed a decade of growth under Taylor. A major event of the period was the opening of the Renwick Gallery in 1972. The Bicentennial of the American Revolution was celebrated in 1976 with a major exhibition entitled America as Art, curated by Richard N. Murray.
