Historical Note
The first Public Information Officer of the National Air and Space Museum w as Lynne C. Murphy, who reported to the director and served from 1976 to 1978. She was succeeded by Rita C. Bobowski, later known as Rita C. Cipalla, who held the title until 1980 when it was changed to Chief, Public Affairs and Museum Services. In 1987 the title was shortened to Chief, Public Affairs, and Cipalla continued to serve until 1990. At that time the special events functions of the office were transferred to the Assistant Director for Development, John Carlin. Cipalla became Assistant Director, Office of Communications, until her departure from the museum in 1991.
The primary function of the Office of Public Affairs was the handling of all events: openings, lectures, presentations, luncheons, ceremonies, and the like.
