These records reflect the varied interests and activities of John R. Kinard as Director of the Anacostia Museum. The files consist primarily of official correspondence with museum professionals, community leaders and activists, officials of Washington, D. C., and Smithsonian management. Kinard's involvement with organizations such as the African American Museums Association, the Anacostia Historical Society, the Anacostia Coordinating Council, and the Afro-American Bicentennial Corporation is documented.
Materials include photographs and clippings from newspapers and magazines, some of which describe Kinard's May 5, 1987, speech at the 51st annual conference of the Southern African Museums Association held in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.
