These records document the construction of the new National Air and Space Museum (NASM) building, from ground-breaking in 1972 until opening in July 1976. The majority of the records were in the custody of the Building Management Division of the museum, while a smaller amount come from the Smithsonian's Office of Design and Construction.
These records consist of bids, correspondence, employee lists, meeting reports, and architectural drawings and plans associated with the work of each contractor. Approximately half the records concern the work of the principal contractor, the Gilbane Building Company, while the other half documents the work of various other contractors dealing with foundations, structural steel, food service equipment, carpentry, landscaping, and the like.
