Descriptive Entry
Curators represented by these records include Grace E. Glance (Associate Curator, 1948-1957), Oliver S. Flint, Jr. (Associate Curator, 1961-1965; Curator, 1965- ), and Richard W. Baumann (Associate Curator, 1972-1975).
These records consist of professional correspondence and administrative files documenting the research and activities of the neuropteroid portion of the Division of Neuropteroids and Diptera. No materials concerning diptera are included in this record unit. Most of the correspondence was created by Oliver S. Flint Jr., and concerns the acquisition, loan, identification, and distribution of neuropteran specimens. A small amount of the correspondence from Flint's predecessor, Grace E. Glance, is included, as are some letters written by Richard W. Baumann. The earliest correspondence dates back to 1938, and was created by Glance in her position as an entomologist researching neuropteroids in the United States Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine from 1925 to 1948. The administrative records in this collection were also created by Flint and include memoranda and correspondence, budget and grant information, and also annual reports and manuscripts written by Flint.
Historical Note
Historical Note
The Division of Neuropteroids was created in July 1963, when the Department of Entomology was established at the United States National Museum. The title of the Division was changed in 1974 to Neuropteroids and Diptera, when research and transactions involving the diptera collection were placed under the same administrative purview as the work of the neuropterists.
