This record unit consists of administrative files of the Department and documents the activities of its curators, Rand, Mecklenburg, Truettner, and Breeskin. The files contain information about Department relations with other National Museum of American Art (NMAA) offices concerning loans, shipments, requests for information, conservation, and exhibits. Exhibitions represented in some detail include Jose De Creeft, 1983. Some materials date to when the museum was known as the National Collection of Fine Arts (NCFA).
In 1984 the Departments of Twentieth Century Painting and Sculpture and Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Painting and Sculpture were again united as the Department of Painting and Sculpture. Harry Rand served as Curator, Twentieth Century Painting and Sculpture, until 1983. In 1984 his title, and that of Virginia M. Mecklenburg and William H. Truettner, changed to Curator, Painting and Sculpture. All three served 1984- . Adelyn Dohme Breeskin remained as Senior Curatorial Advisor until her death in 1986.
