These records primarily document the administration of the Belém Ecological Project. They consist of correspondence and memoranda between Philip S. Humphrey, Smithsonian administrators, and project staff including Thomas E. Lovejoy III; financial reports and fiscal records; and files on project personnel.

Historical Note

Historical Note
The Belém Ecological Project was a multidisciplinary study of environmental conditions of the Amazon delta in the vicinity of Belém, Brazil. The purpose of the project was to improve knowledge of tropical delta forest environments and determine the influence of human activities on those environments. The project was funded through a grant from the Army Research Office and ran from 1967 to 1971. Philip S. Humphrey, Chairman, Department of Vertebrate Zoology, National Museum of Natural History, was Principal Investigator.
