Descriptive Entry
Descriptive Entry
This record unit documents the activities of the Department of Education and its staff. The bulk of the records contain information about specific programs of the Department, including the Education Aide Program, the Docent Program and the Volunteer Program. Other records document NPG's current and future exhibitions, educational activities, plans designed primarily for visually handicapped visitors to the Haptic Gallery, and motion pictures.
These records consist of correspondence, memoranda, notes, curators' reports to the Director, Marvin Sadik, and minutes of staff meetings. The correspondence largely contains letters of appreciation from teachers, students, elementary and secondary school administrators, and the general public.
Historical Note
Historical Note
The Department of Education, National Portrait Gallery (NPG), was part of the Office of the Historian from 1969 to 1971. It became a separate entity in 1971 when James R. Vivian III was appointed Curator of Education. He was succeeded by Dennis A. O'Toole, who served from 1972 through 1978. In January 1979 Kenneth Yellis was appointed Curator of Education and served in that capacity through 1980.
The Department of Education is responsible for preparing educational materials and organizing exhibitions related to the history of the United States, its culture, biography, and the history of the art of portraiture, as reflected in the collections of NPG.
