The American Historical Society was founded in 1835 in Washington, D.C., to "Discover, procure, and preserve, whatever may relate to the natural, civil, literary, and ecclesiastical history of America in general, and the United States in particular." In 1840 the Society became the Department of American History and Antiquities of the National Institution for the Promotion of Science.
