These papers consist of copies of letters which Otis Tufton Mason wrote back to the Smithsonian while on a trip in Europe to study museum practices, 1889; correspondence concerning his work on Central American ethnology, 1899-1900; and newspaper clippings collected by Mason concerning museums, 1890-1897.

Historical Note
Otis Tufton Mason (1838-1908) was an ethnologist and museum expert. From 1884 he was Curator of Ethnology at the United States National Museum, and from 1902 he was Head Curator, Department of Anthropology.
