Descriptive Entry
These papers include correspondence, chiefly for the period 1920-1942, with Engelhardt's professional colleagues, collaborators, and interested amateurs; and color drawings done by Mary Benson and Mrs. William Beutenmueller for United States National Museum Bulletin 190, The North American Clear-Wing Moths of the Family Aegeriidae, by George P. Engelhardt, published posthumously in 1946.

Historical Note

Historical Note
George Paul Engelhardt (1871-1942) was born and educated in Germany. In 1889 he emigrated to the United States and became a citizen. After various other employments, Engelhardt began in 1903 his association with the Brooklyn Museum, a connection which lasted until his retirement in 1930. Engelhardt's special interest was in the Aegeriidae, and he was acknowledged to be one of the world's greatest students and authorities in that area of entomology. His interest and knowledge were more than taxonomic. Engelhardt was particularly interested in assisting the careers of younger men in the field, and many entomologists who attained substantial standing owed their beginnings to his encouragement.
