The Vivarium Society was founded in 1925 by a group of Washington area naturalists who were actively interested in the study of natural history in the field, and in the maintenance of vivariums for scientific observations on living specimens. Activities centered around field trips and monthly meetings at which members or guests reported on their recent research.
