Lucien M. Turner (1848-1909), a member of the Army Signal Corps, collected natural history and ethnological specimens for the United States National Museum. From 1874 to 1877, he was a meteorological observer for the Signal Service at St. Michael, Alaska. He also trained voluntary observers for the Service in the Aleutians from 1878 to 1881. In 1882, Turner was sent to Fort Chimo, Labrador, as an observer and remained there until he returned to Washington in 1884. At each of his duty stations, Turner made extensive collections and sent them to the Smithsonian.
