Historical Note

Historical Note
Bernard Rogan Ross (1827-1874) was chief trader for the Hudson's Bay Company in the Mackenzie River District of northwest Canada during the 1860s. In that position, he was able to lend substantial help to Robert Kennicott in his explorations in that area. Kennicott's activities provided a stimulus to Ross and other members of the Company, and Ross began to make collections of ethnological and natural history specimens, many of which he sent to the Smithsonian.
