Historical Note

Historical Note
Harry K. Harring (1871-1928) was born in Nykjobing, Denmark. He studied at the Technical School at Skanderborg, Denmark, and after graduation was employed in the design and manufacture of physical and chemical apparatus. He came to the United States in 1893 and shortly thereafter received appointment as Scientific Instrument Maker at the National Bureau of Standards, Washington, D.C. In his spare time, Harring developed an interest in fresh water microscopic organisms, especially the Rotatoria. His published works consist of 12 titles, including "Synopsis of the Rotatoria" (United States National Museum Bulletin 81, 1913). His most important work was "The Rotifers of Wisconsin," authored in collaboration with Frank Jacob Myers. On May 1, 1914, Harring was awarded the honorary title of Custodian of the Rotatoria in the Division of Marine Invertebrates of the United States National Museum (USNM). He was also editor for the section on Rotatoria, Gastrotricha, and Chaetognatha for Biological Abstracts.
