These papers consist primarily of correspondence between Sherman and entomologists and other naturalists including Alexander Agassiz, William Harris Ashmead, Samuel Henshaw, Leland Ossian Howard, John Lawrence LeConte, Clinton Hart Merriam, Alpheus Spring Packard, John Bernhard Smith, Robert Evans Snodgrass, Charles Henry Tyler Townsend, and James Zetek. Also included are diaries and notebooks which document his entomological studies, business records, and reprints.

Historical Note
John D. Sherman, Jr., (1872-1960) was an entomologist and entomological book dealer. He lived in Mount Vernon, New York, and was a long-time member of the New York Entomological Society. For a time he served as President of the Society. Sherman sent specimens and reprints to the United States National Museum from 1893 to 1950.
