Historical Note
Ashley B. Gurney (1911-1988), an entomologist, began his career at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 1935 as a Field Agent with the Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine. He remained at the Bureau until 1955, eventually achieving the title of Entomologist. In 1955, Gurney transferred to the Systematic Entomology Laboratory, USDA, where he served as an Entomologist until his retirement in 1975. At that time he was made a Cooperating Scientist at the Systematic Entomology Laboratory. Gurney was a member of the Entomological Society of America and served as Executive Secretary of the Society in 1954. His primary research interest was the study of orthopteroids, chiefly grasshoppers and cockroaches.
