Descriptive Entry
The papers of Alan Stone consist of incoming and outgoing correspondence documenting his career at the USDA and his research on Diptera. Most of the letters concern the identification of specimens.
Historical Note
Historical Note
Alan Stone (1904- ), an entomologist specializing in the taxonomy of Diptera, was educated at Cornell University, receiving a B.S. degree in 1926 and a Ph.D. in 1929. In 1931, Stone was appointed Assistant Entomologist with the Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). He was promoted to Entomologist in 1939 and remained with the USDA until his retirement in 1971. Stone was an authority on the Diptera families Culicidae, Tabanidae, and Simuliidae. His bibliography totaled over 105 titles including catalogs of the mosquitoes of the world, 1959, and the Diptera of North America, 1965.
